New Line: Lord of the Lawsuit

Fifteen New Zealand-based actors who appeared in various incarnations throughout the course of the Lord of the Rings trilogy have filed suit against New Line Cinema, claiming some creative accounting on the studio's behalf has ripped them off of their cut in an estimated $100 million in profits from movie merchandise.

The mammoth stage production of “The Lord of the Rings,” which was mostly panned by critics, is closing in Toronto.

Producer Kevin Wallace said Wednesday that the $24 million, 3 1/2 hour show will close September 3.”We’re doing respectable but were not sold out. The scale of this show needs that,” producer David Mirvish said at a news conference. “The costs are 50 percent more than ‘The Lion King’ to run so it (the theater) must be full.”

Lord of the Rings to Take to Stage as Musical

LONDON (Reuters) – After setting cinema box office records around the world, "The Lord of the Rings" is to take to the stage as a musical, the producers announced to Reuters on Tuesday.

The show, based on the fantasy classic by J.R.R. Tolkien, is to open in March 2006 in Toronto and come to London six months later.

But the producers have promised to go back to the original tale of Middle Earth and not try to reproduce the dazzling special effects from the movie trilogy, which earned $3 billion worldwide and garnered a string of Oscars (news – web sites).
