Getting back into 40k
« on: February 28, 2009, 03:05:47 AM »
My wife mentioned the other day that she would not mind getting back into Warhammer 40k.  She normally does not like sci-fi games, however she likes Tyranids.

With our son now approaching 13 we will be able to start playing more games.

I want to get back into my Space Wolves but their Codex is not out yet.  Rumours at the GW Store here say it will be just over a year before its release and maybe some updated models.

So what to collect until then?  The box set comes with Orks and Marines.  I will paint the Marines as Space Wolves and maybe just keep the Orks as an after thought army to play.  I've never been a fan of Orks.

So my wife will collect Tyranids, my son has an interest in Eldar.

So I have to narrow my choices between these until my Space Wolves come out.

[*]Tau
[*]Necrons
[*]Witch Hunters

Not sure who I will start with.

I like Orks. The match my sloppy painting style. You should find someone local that like orks and buy two starter sets and then switch models with each other.

Ok my Wife and I just got back from the Games Workshop store.

I got

TAU

Tau Fire Warrior Team: 12 Firewarriors and 2 drones

Tau Empire Devilfish: 1 Devilfish Troop Transport

Tau Empire Battleforce: 1 Crisis XV8 Battlesuit, 1 Devilfish Tank, 3 XV25 Stealth Armour, 12 Tau Fire Warriors, 12 Kroot Carnivores

This should keep me busy for a long time.  I figured with the Firewarriors each in a Devilfish and the Battlesuit and Stealth Armour being able to jump jet that should give me a nice fast attack style army.

I think I'm partial to Number 2. I tend to use too much green so more green warriors would tend to get lost. That's just me though. Maybe you use too much tan :P

I like option 3...little like a camo pattern. breaks up the outline. would be nice in real life... and still should not be too hard to paint.

Well the Mega Paint set finally arrived!

I started to paint my first squad of Fire Warriors.  No I remember why it is I like pre-paints so much!

First I place a foundation on the material
Then a foundation on the armor
Then I paint the armor
Then I highlight the model
Then I use a wash on the model
Then I add more highlights to the model
Then I add detail to the model

Takes too long.  It will take me a year to finish these!!!

It really helps to have a Games Workshop store here in Oxford.  I went down yesterday and brought my models, brushes and the paints I needed and sat down at one of the painting booths and spent about 90 minutes painting the squad (I'm very slow).  Then I met my wife for lunch and walked back to my part of town to pick the kids up.

I think they talked me into getting the GW Paint Gun.  I could get the base coat done on all the models at once and when you use it on tanks/vehicles it eliminates the problem with brush strokes.
