Dungeon Crawlers Quest?
« on: August 03, 2012, 02:33:43 AM »
Take a look at the Casualty bases here

http://www.warbases.co.uk/#/accessories/4533097200

I was thinking of creating a DC game kind of in the lines of MKD, or Dungeon Quest or Rune Quest but be specific for what we like.  The main part of any game is the mechanics.  Miniatures and other stuff is just accessories.  So what I propose is designing a game and selling the bases, cards and rules but allowing the player to use ANY miniature they want.

Right now I'm thinking Hex based miniatures but I have not decided on grid or rulers.  What do you guys think?

I always like a dungeon concept game, you know that. What sort of use did you have in mind for those bases? Can we put something other than numbers in them? Have you seen any up close and personal?

Cheers mate!

I've bought some bases from the company and I am having them laser cut my Imperial Fence on 2 and 3mm mdf board.

From the communications I've had the laser can do partial cuts at 0.25 mm which is pretty damn fine.  I'll see if I can't get a few of those bases with my next order from them.

The thing is not to do a MKD so I'm up for any suggestions.  I'd like to do a combination of combat base and cards.

I keep hearing (and experiencing) complaints how they like this but the figures are crap or they like the figures but the rules are to large.  I would like to have a game where I can pick from the hundreds of figures and use it in a setting of my choice.

Working on different ideas for the base.

The two ideas I like are very complex but extremely cool.  They involve internal gears.   :o

1st idea is a hex base with 6 gears for stats.

2nd idea is very complex.  Circular base with an internal Planetary gear system.

In both cases the player can change the gears to match what type of miniature is on the base.

I'm going to try to do this and make it no thicker than 5mm or 6mm.  Still thinner than the MK2.0 with those Hero bases

I like the idea of using hex because it allows a universal facing rule and no need of placing arcs of fire and rear arcs on each base.

What about just pre-creating 'units' (i.e. the bases) and then having the players attach their own figures. Balance issues can be taken care of that way I would think. Hex works but not so well in dungeons, what about octogonal?  How many stats will the figures have? The gear idea might have some promise.

Just thinking out loud.

Cheers!

I've written and deleted this post three times so I'm just going to ramble as all I have is ideas.

Well I thought that the main stats and information would be on playing cards.  So the playing cards would contain

  • Type of Character
  • Stats
  • Abilities
  • Weapons

The main concept of combat is going to be based around Fatigue.  The Fatigue gear will also control Offence.  Maybe Defence as well?  Not sure if there should be a movement stat on the base or not.  Health will have it's own gear and will not be attached to the Fatigue section.

I like Hexes because it deals with all the facing issues quite nicely and allows without argument who can close into close combat.  I was thinking of using a grid less system however having a hex grid with a dungeon is simple.

See my blog http://gurps.dungeoncrawlers.com/

Attributes (not all on the gear base)
  • Fatigue
  • Health
  • Offence
  • Defence
  • Movement?

Character Playing Cards

  • Weapon Cards
  • Spell Cards
  • Ability Cards

Now I've been working off and on with the gears trying to figure out the best ratio and how much information I can get on a base.  I like the hexes because it is only slightly larger than your standard 1" (25mm) base with each side being 15mm.  If we do a circular base then we are looking at 1.5" or larger and I'd like to avoid that as many people have expressed a dislike to the larger bases.

Cool, let me digest this and see if I can add anything to your thoughts.

One thing to remember is I want Fatigue to govern most abilities.  So you can if you want push your character to move farther, attack harder, or using special abilities uses Fatigue such as special moves, magic, etc.  When you use your Fatigue you move your gear down, as the gear moves down your other abilities automatically go down as well so the next turn you won't be able to move as far, attack/defend as well.  However it does not stop you from using your miniature the next turn nor does it cause you any damage in any way.

Fatigue will regenerate +1 for every 2 turns if you use the miniature or +1 per turn if they rest.

Just back from the con, again didn't make any money but made some great new contacts again... and if you read 'Knights of the Dinner Table' comic, you'll see me interviewed in the latest issue.  8)

And boy did I get SWAG!

Cheers!
