Maps for a Living Dungeon
« on: June 09, 2009, 05:52:35 AM »
I'm thinking of creating a "Living Dungeon" on my Wiki.  Pretty much each section of the Dungeon (1-8 rooms) will be on a single wiki page with links to the connecting areas.

The "Living Dungeon" will have dimensional pockets that appear like an outside world.  Kind of like playing a Hack and Slash video game.  You may be outside but your limited where you can go.

The question is what style of maps should I use?  Help me decide and tell me why you think the style you choose is better.

Old School maps like the classic D&D modules from the 70's and 80's

A Lighted Dungeon where you will see many Dark Areas

Battle Map so you can print out the sections and use miniatures?
Battlemap.jpg[/attachment:2gadnkiw]

Perspective Dungeon giving you a Isometric view of the dungeon

Coloured Style 1
SS2.jpg[/attachment:2gadnkiw]

Coloured Style 2
SS2 A.jpg[/attachment:2gadnkiw]

Hand Drawn

Old School Perspective

Another Option I may do is just a simple dungeon for the wiki pages, simple meaning no furniture or any major frills, and offer a pdf battle map with all the details.  I really can not decide.

'3D' Perspective on the wiki (I love those in scenarios) with a battlemat download. You can describe it to your players, show them the 3d view and then battle it out with minis. Best of all worlds.

Can't wait to see them!

Cheers.

I can't decide

Personally, I like the coloured 2 but that's a visual thing. For playability, I think I'd opt for the Battlemat. You could have the option for 3D terrain on the mat so that would enhance the play.

The Shadows are all wrong on the Lighted Dungeon so I'd say no on that unless we render it with something like DAZ.

What are you planning with the living dungeon? A Play by Email type thing? If I understand that, I can vote better.

Nope it will just be like a never ending module for people to do.  I may even build sections out of Hirst Arts, or World Works Games or Fat Dragon Games 3D dungeons.

But you only let me pick one option...    I want two! Battlemap certainly and 3d perspective for look and feel!

Don't want a vote for one to diminish the.chances for the other.

I will also be adding an off line version through "The Keep" by NBOS Software for those of you that are interested.

Speaking of Wiki's, Rob did you ever figure out how that one wiki was able to incorporate random generators in their wiki code?

Just with the absolutely massive size of the living dungeon, even now in its nascent stages, it's probably a good idea to go with simplicity. So I voted old school. But then, the battle maps are just too useful to go without for actual play sessions, so the two votes per person thing was a very good thing for me. ;)
