Stuff / Designing a Simple Wargame Board
« on: May 26, 2009, 08:48:49 AM »
So as I now have a small group that comes over to wargame (two of them live with me, a.k.a. Son and wife) I need to get a standard 4'x6' table.

Here is what I am thinking.

Two half sections lined with felt (as to not scratch my dinning room table) with latches on them to secure the two halves together.

A 2" ledge going around the table to prevent models and dice from falling.  I may go with 3" as this would allow me to place a dungeon first then the top side over it in 6" tiles

Any suggestions from anyone?

Web Trolls / Formatting Problems
« on: May 26, 2009, 03:04:47 AM »
Rob I can not do any proper formatting with this new site.  Even if I put in Breaks using HTML as soon as you go to publish or preview it erases them. Leaving everything packed together.

example X is pictures = is text.  I want a picture on the left, picture on the right with text inbetween them

X = X

However no matter how many breaks I put in to get the text to center between the pictures it shoves all the text right to the top (still between pictures) so text that should be on pictures towards the bottom are now way at the top.

Warhammer 40K / 1st Game of 40K
« on: May 26, 2009, 01:31:13 AM »
Ok we played two massive games yesterday.  One 3 way game and one 4 way game.

The Tyrnids are falling right for my trap.  Behind that rock is a squad of Kroot Carnivores.  However only four survived the assault.  That is ok because the rest of the Tau unleashed a barrage of fire to completely annihilate the Gaunt brood.

We have not had time to paint them all yet.

The Eldar realize they made a grave deployment error.

That game was strictly an Annihilate mission.  I won with two points!  I was amazed on just how good the Tau are, as long as you keep them out of the assault phase.  Lots of rules to relearn and old rules to forget.  No more breaking away out of assault like in the old days, Now you can move your vehicles full speed and deploy your squad with no penalties?  Can't find anything that says they can not do that.  However it was fun.

Directly after that my friend Shane arrive and Chaos joined the fight.  So now we have 'nids, Tau, Eldar and Chaos fighting over a single objective in the centre of the board.  500 points each.

Looks like the big guys take offence to the Demon Prince.  Too bad the Warriors dies being the synapses creatures.  Really ruined the game for the Tyranids after that.

Gene Stealers show Khorne Berserkers exactly what the Assault Phase is about, they slaughtered them and then moved on the the rest of Chaos.

Down my side of the board Eldar learns not to underestimate the range and power of Tau Pulse Rifles.  Within two rounds I had taken out both the Wave Serpent and the War walker.  The Eldar took offence to this and assaulted my Fire Warriors Who survived 3 long rounds of Assault with Dire Avengers!  Lucky rolls!!

Cheeky!

The game ended up in a draw between me and Chaos.

Both games had taught me a lot about my army.

    Stay out of close combat.
Pulse Rifles are just as dangerous at 30" as they are at 12" with two shots each (Rapid Fire)
Multi-Trackers (preferably hard wired) are a MUST for Crisis Suits.  Allowing them to fire two weapons in the same turn.
    I need more Crisis Suits.
Fire Warriors need to stay out of Assault Phase.
    Need to purchase Pathfinders!

Web Trolls / Having issues uploading
« on: April 30, 2009, 12:50:47 AM »
Sorry Rob,

I've been having some real issues.  First my brand new printer died.  Damn print heads have jammed up, lost my receipt so I have to purchase a new one.

I've been trying to upload a pdf.  the first time failed so I had to rename it.  Second time failed as well.  I mailed you the pdf.  I also mailed you a pdf of the missing MKD tiles due to the same type of errors and it still has not been added.  Did you get the pdf's?

Error uploading. - File "Mage_Knight_World_Mercator.pdf" already exists.

I'm beginning to think a shack in Montana with no technology is the way to go. :S

Campaign Cartographer / Recreating Mage Knight Map
« on: April 27, 2009, 01:00:27 AM »
The only map I could find of the Mage Knight world is the interactive map on the WizKids website.  With WizKids now defunct I would hate to loose the map.

So I'm going to recreate the map in Campaign Cartographer 3.

The first thing I did was go the the Interactive Map and hit F11 for full screen.  Then pressing Ctrl+Mouse Scroll I zoomed the map until it fit the entire screen.  I then pressed Prt Scr to take a screen shot of the map.

Then in Photoshop I trimmed it up an bit and saved it as a png, jpeg and bmp.

Campaign Cartographer / Oxford Lecture
« on: April 26, 2009, 11:04:03 PM »
I just had to share this. I went to a lecture at Exeter College in Oxford today titled "From Gough to Google" by John Leighfield (creator of Get Mapping an aerial photography and mapping product business). The lecture was great and Mr. Leighfield brought in a few of his maps from his extensive collection.

All the maps where of Oxford or Oxfordshire and where original prints.

Christoper Saxton 1574 -
Amazing detail! It is thought the maps where painted by children, yeah Cartography sweat shops!

Saxton/Hole 1607 -
Another lovely map, much cleaner than the Saxton and I dare say even the John Speed map!

John Speed 1611-
This map of Oxfordshire was Beautiful! Lovely detail in the borders with the college heraldry and a city map of Oxford.

John Ogilby 1675-
Makes me want that May Annual right now! Great road maps! The background was of a ribbon that wrapped top to bottom left to right with the road drawn on the ribbons (not sure if I'm explaining it properly) I was so glad to be able to see it in person!

Dr. Robert Plot 1676 -
A bit over done on the Heraldry (sponsorship) but an interesting map
Many Ordnance Survey maps from 1800's on which are still nice to look at.

He even had a 1973 KGB (yes that KGB) map of Oxford which was VERY accurate and noted things such as Electrical and water controls and other such non-touristy things.

Mr. Leighfield also had several old Atlas books, and travel books which I unfortunately did not get to look at, some where called "The Miniature Speed" which are Speed maps made very small and bound in a book that included travel distances.

Great lecture, I learned many things that I did not know before such as most of Saxton, Speed, etc. maps are remakes of Agas maps so they (Saxton and Speed) did not even re-survey the area (Although the town maps Speed did survey himself). Sometimes town spellings where done wrong so you could tell who copied from whom by tracing the spelling errors. The example given was the village Ifley near Oxford which on many maps is spelt Isley.

In one of John Speeds maps he noticed that there was a picture of a town with no name, he wrote a note "Quaere" which is Latin for ask, meaning he was going to ask later to find out the towns name. Well he forgot and the town was labelled Quaere on his maps and consequently every one who copied from him until much later when the error was spotted and corrected!

It was an hour worth my time!!

Paper Terrain & Models / 40K paper terrain
« on: April 07, 2009, 11:01:30 AM »
No I'm not designing any at this moment.  I still have not finished the MechWarrior range of paper models.

I'm going to be building some Warhammer 40k boards using World Works Games, Ebble Miniatures and any other good paper terrain site I can find.

I'm using A1 sheets of mat board.  The table will be 4 A1 sheets (2 A0 sheets).

I will go ahead and place pictures of my progress and what I'm using/doing to make it.

I will definitely be using Mars Station, *MegaBash* Platform Command, Platform Command, Red Sector, Platform Command Battleground for the first board.  It will be a "Mars" industrial section.  I just started the planning phase.

On the reverse side I'm thinking typical forest woodland using Exterior Works: Hinterlands, Ebbles Miniatures: Field Camp, Ebbles Miniatures: Frontier Farmstead and anything else I might be able to find.

I remember having the Games Workshop Imperial Firebase, Space Marine Bunkers, and there was a third that I owned as well but I can not remember the name of it.  If you know it or have pictures please post!

If you have any suggestions or know of other paper terrain companies let me know.  I will keep everyone posted on my progress.

Four A1 Mattboards = £9
Two Rolls of Electricians tape (to protect the edges of the mat board) £0.99

Stuff / WizKids website is down...
« on: March 22, 2009, 01:02:13 AM »
The WizKids website has been down for a few days, but the forums are still up.  Of course you can not comment or post new messages because you need to log in from the main site...which is down.

Is this the nail in the coffin or a sign of new ownership?

Computer and Video Games / EGOSOFT X-series
« on: March 04, 2009, 12:50:22 PM »
I bought the X series lately.

X-GOLD

X-Gold is two games in one, not only does it contain X: Beyond the Frontier, it also contains the expansion pack X-Tension.

X: Beyond the Frontier tells the story of mankind's rise and fall in the universe, and the attempt by Kyle Brennan to help repopulate the stars using a new ship called the Experimental Shuttle, and how he became trapped in a closed group of sectors linked by a series of jumpgates.
X-Tension is the eagerly awaited expansion pack to X: Beyond the Frontier. The expansion is not limited by a linear plot line but makes use of new ways to expand your empire. You can now take part in missions that are offered to you throughout the game. You are no longer limited to one ship, but can now buy and pilot all fighters and small transports in the game.

Explore the universe, trade in over 90 sectors, with over 50 goods, upgrade your ship with dozens of wares available to you by 5 unique alien races and protect yourself from the hostile Xenon.

_________________________________________________ ____________________

Even though it was released in 1999 and the graphics are ancient, I am still having a great time playing this game.  It reminds me of Wing Commander: Privateer, which was an amazing game!

This is not for people with little to no patience.  The game takes time and can move really slowly most of the time.  But it is a nice open ended game.

You can purchase your own space stations and mining asteroids!  This is a fun game and if your into this kind of thing then I recommend it.

I've programmed my Saitek X-45 to work with X-Gold allowing me to ignore having to use keyboard commands at all.

Warhammer 40K / Getting back into 40k
« on: February 28, 2009, 03:05:47 AM »
My wife mentioned the other day that she would not mind getting back into Warhammer 40k.  She normally does not like sci-fi games, however she likes Tyranids.

With our son now approaching 13 we will be able to start playing more games.

I want to get back into my Space Wolves but their Codex is not out yet.  Rumours at the GW Store here say it will be just over a year before its release and maybe some updated models.

So what to collect until then?  The box set comes with Orks and Marines.  I will paint the Marines as Space Wolves and maybe just keep the Orks as an after thought army to play.  I've never been a fan of Orks.

So my wife will collect Tyranids, my son has an interest in Eldar.

So I have to narrow my choices between these until my Space Wolves come out.

[*]Tau
[*]Necrons
[*]Witch Hunters

Not sure who I will start with.

Paper Forge had a few other Mage Knight and Mage Knight Dungeon resources.  If you have them saved please share with us!

« on: February 23, 2009, 02:10:14 AM »
I've uploaded some old Dungeon Forge MKD files to the download section.

These are originally made by Duane R. Haut II.  Dungeon Forge offered some great MKD Resources years ago.  I'd hate to see these fade away so after rediscovering them on my external hard drive I thought I would share with everyone.

If you have old MKD resources like these upload them in the download section and give myself, IbsontheGrey or Rob an email so it can get approved.

Files added
